Oxysterols and retinal degeneration

چکیده
Retinal degeneration, characterised by the progressive death of retinal neurons, is most common cause visual impairment. Oxysterols are cholesterol derivatives produced via enzymatic and/or free radical oxidation that regulate homeostasis in retina. Preclinical and clinical studies have suggested a connection between oxysterols degeneration. Here, we summarise early recent work related to retina oxysterol-producing enzymes distribution We examine impact loss on pathology explore molecular mechanisms associated with toxic or protective roles individual different types conclude increased efforts better understand oxysterol-associated pathophysiology will help development effective degeneration therapies. Retinal remodeling during retinal degeneration.
Retinal degenerations, regardless of the initiating event or gene defect, often result in a loss of photoreceptors. This formal deafferentation of the neural retina eliminates the intrinsic glutamatergic drive of the sensory retina and, perhaps more importantly, removes coordinated Ca++-coupled signaling to the neural retina. As in other central nervous system degenerations, deafferentation act...
متن کاملLight and inherited retinal degeneration.
Light deprivation has long been considered a potential treatment for patients with inherited retinal degenerative diseases, but no therapeutic benefit has been demonstrated to date. In the few clinical studies that have addressed this issue, the underlying mutations were unknown. Our rapidly expanding knowledge of the genes and mechanisms involved in retinal degeneration have made it possible t...

Hereditary primary pigmentary degeneration of the retina occurs in a number of experimental animals, the condition closely resembling retinitis pigmentosa in man (Cogan, 1950). In therat, themodeofinheritanceisasanautosomalrecessivecharacteristic (Bourne et al., 1938), whereas in man the situation is more complicated in that at least seven different forms of inheritance have been recognized. In...
متن کاملFeline central retinal degeneration.
Seven domestic cats with feline central retinal degeneration (FCRD) were investigated by ophthalmoscopy, fluorescein angiography, electroretinography, and light and electron microscopy. Little or no increase in lesion size was observed ophthalmoscopically over periods as long as four years. Five cats showed normal rod electroretinographic (ERG) responses and abnormal cone responses. In one cat ...
متن کاملPhotoreceptor Cells Influence Retinal Vascular Degeneration in Mouse Models of Retinal Degeneration and Diabetes
PURPOSE Loss of photoreceptor cells is associated with retinal vascular degeneration in retinitis pigmentosa, whereas the presence of photoreceptor cells is implicated in vascular degeneration in diabetic retinopathy. To investigate how both the absence and presence of photoreceptors could damage the retinal vasculature, we compared two mouse models of photoreceptor degeneration (opsin-/- and R...
